The sturdy blue-and-white or indigo plaid arrived in the islands in the mid-1800s aboard merchant ships. Plantation laborers and paniolo, the Hawaiian cowboys who worked the ranches of Maui, Molokaʻi and the Big Island, took to it immediately.
